If you are planning a road trip around the country, there are certain destinations that are absolute classics. NYC, Los Angeles, and Chicago are cities that everyone recognizes, but they might be a bit to cliché or out of the way to justify planning a trip around. While no two road trips are alike, and you by no means need to visit these cities to have a great time, I believe that the cities below have everything you could ever want from a road trip destination. From great food to affordable hotels, these cities will provide you with all the fuel needed to power amazing memories and unforgettable experiences.
Boston is a great city because it has something for everyone. If you are into sports, Boston fans are truly in a league of their own. If you are all about food, Boston boasts some of the best seafood in the nation, not to mention a Little Italy that rivals its counterpart in New York. Boston gets a bit of a bad rap for being an unfriendly city, but once you visit, you will understand that cannot be further from the truth (unless you decide to wear a Yankee’s hat). While Boston is great any time of the year, it might be fun to go when one of the local sports teams is in the playoffs. Going to a bar to see a Boston sports game is really a once in a lifetime experience – they have so much dedication to their town and players that it puts other towns to shame.
Ah, Seattle. Land of coffee beans, beanie hats, and people who love to wear beanie hats while drinking coffee. Seattle’s reputation kind of precedes it, as many people think that Seattle is a land of hipsters and rain. There is no doubt that there is an excess of rain, but there are so many amazing things to see in Seattle. If you have a good tent and raincoat, there are not too many more beautiful places to camp in the whole country. On top of this, there are ample opportunities to go to the shore and fish or eat some seafood that gives Boston a run for its money. We singled Seattle out on this list, but you can go just about anywhere in the Pacific Northwest and have a truly sensational time. Maybe one day they will get their basketball team back, but for now they have some of the most passionate (albeit annoying) football fans in the country.
Austin is quickly becoming one of the most popular cities in the country, not only to visit but to live in. The land is cheap, there is no income tax, and there is a thriving cultural scene. Austin is a truly great city because it is so modern and well-planned. You can go on a bike tour one day, and a brewery tour the next. The sports games are just as present as the museums and cultural centers. There is truly something for everyone in Austin. Oh, and did we mention the barbecue? No? While the seafood in the cities above is great, there is nothing quite like Texas barbecue. Between the tangy sauces, the fatty meats, and the tasty side dishes, it is worth going to Austin just to have one delicious meal.
